Flow Over Topography
Craig Epifanio is combining theory with idealized numerical modeling to study the basic physics of topographically induced disturbances in the atmosphere. Particular topics of interest include the stability and breaking of topographic gravity waves and the formation of lee vortices and wakes.
The Subtropical Sea Breeze
John Nielsen-Gammon's research group is investigating the behavior of the sea breeze in the subtropics and the effect of near-resonant interaction with the inertial cycle. The sea breeze cycle is instrumental in modulating coastal convection and causing stagnation and recirculation that leads to poor air quality along the northern Gulf of Mexico coast.
John Nielsen-Gammon uses advanced potential vorticity diagnostic techniques to understand the synoptic-scale dynamics of the atmosphere. Areas of particular interest are upper-level mobile trough formation, wave propagation and cyclogenesis.
Large-Scale Transport and Mixing
Kenneth Bowman is using Lagrangian methods to interpret aircraft and satellite measurements of trace species in order to understand large-scale transport processes in the troposphere and stratosphere.
